Because we’re spending more time at home this year due to the pandemic hitting in March, the UK has seen a rise in “at-home creativity” with a surge in Brits interested in starting podcasts, YouTube channels, DJing and producing music at home.
Audio-Technica have undertaken research to analyse search data from pre and post March 2020. It compared monthly interest growth to reveal the top fifteen cities which are experiencing an at-home creator boom.
Data released by Ofcom in 2019 suggests that 7.1 million people in the UK listen to podcasts each week, doubling over the previous five years. This continued growth is providing new opportunities for creatives to express themselves, as well as alternative income streams through digital channels.
It was Bristol that saw the biggest increase in the number of people looking to start podcasts, youtube channels, DJing at home and producing music out of anywhere in the UK.
When comparing interest since March against the same period in 2019, there has been an average increase of 42 monthly searches per 100,000 people.
In addition to seeing the biggest overall growth, Bristol has had particular growth in podcasting interest, making it the podcast capital of the UK. The BBC recently announced a new Creative Development Unit in Bristol which is focused on podcasts and so it’s likely that further talent will emerge from the area in the coming years.
The data also reveals Leicester is the YouTube capital, Aberdeen the at-home DJ capital and both Salford & Aberdeen the at-home recording capitals of the UK.

Data was collected between September 29 and October 2020, using the sources UK Cities and Google Ads Keyword Planner. The 30 largest cities in the UK by population were compared and ranked by the amount of online searches for key phrases relating to the growth in “at-home” creativity, comparing searches made between March and August 2019 with those made between March and August 2020.
Sarah Yule, sales and marketing director at Audio-Technica says: “It’s been a challenging year for creatives in the UK and this research just goes to show that despite everything, the nation’s appetite to express its creativity is stronger than ever.
Digital channels can provide a much needed outlet for those at home right now and so we wanted to let creatives know that they are not alone. Hopefully, these tips and advice will be useful for anyone considering starting up a podcast, vlog or music recording at the moment.”
