Global is launching a new podcast that tells the stories behind some of the most dramatic moments in sporting history.
How It All Played Out: Sport’s Greatest Moments is fronted by two of Britain’s most trusted sports voices, Mark Pougatch and Paul Hayward.
The series will go deep into some of the most defining, controversial, and iconic events in sporting history, from legendary triumphs to the flashpoints that sparked global debate and outrage.
Mark Pougatch is Chief Sports Presenter for ITV Sport, and Paul Hayward is Contributing Editor at The Observer. In each episode they will explore topics like why England may never host the men’s World Cup again, the enduring mystery of legendary racehorse Shergar, and the controversy that shaped Muhammad Ali’s career.
The podcast will also examine how sport can play a significant role in politics and culture on the world stage. For example, Mark and Paul will carefully analyse how the 1995 Rugby World Cup in South Africa helped to unite the country divided by decades of apartheid, a moment that transcended sport and changed history forever.
Episodes will be released on Tuesdays with a bonus episode each Thursday which uncovers the quirky, forgotten corners of sport – from golf on the moon to how the Kia Oval helped launch the FA Cup.
These episodes bring a playful contrast to the main series and shine a light on stories you’ve probably never heard.
Mark Pougatch said: “Sport is full of incredible moments, but the stories behind them are just as fascinating.
“How It All Played Out is about going beyond the headlines to uncover the twists, turns, and what-ifs that shaped the games we love.
“I’ve always been fascinated by the drama of sport, and this podcast gives Paul and I the chance to relive some of the biggest moments through a fresh lens. I can’t wait for listeners to join us on this journey!”
Paul Hayward added: “Sport isn’t just about results or winners and losers; it’s about the stories that shape eras, careers, and cultures.
“Our new podcast delves into the landmark moments in world sport, applying fresh analysis and context. With our deep love of sports history, it’s been a privilege to explore these stories alongside Mark. I hope listeners enjoy the journey as much as we have.”
Vicky Etchells, Director of Podcasts at Global, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Mark and Paul to the Global podcasting family.
“With their unrivalled experience and insight, How It All Played Out explores defining moments that changed the sporting world forever. It’s compelling, thoughtful, and full of surprises. If you love sport, or history – or both – this is the perfect podcast for you!”
