Grayson Perry talks food, cycling and art on Dish podcast

This week’s guest on Dish from Waitrose is Turner Prize-winning artist Grayson Perry, joining hosts Nick Grimshaw and chef Angela Hartnett OBE.

The much-loved foodie podcast combines conversation, recipes and celebrity stories, and Perry’s episode is a mix of humour, honesty and eccentric detail.

He opens up about his daily cycling habit, explaining that he often goes weeks without using a car or public transport.

“I cycle everywhere… all year round. I do it for leisure. I used to do it for sport,” he says, before recalling mountain bike racing and the satisfaction of overtaking Lycra-clad riders while wearing a dress.

Food memories feature heavily, from his daily ritual of Marmite on toast with homemade bread, to his fondness for milk chocolate straight from the fridge and his 11am banana with black coffee.

He also shares a distaste for aubergine, mushy vegetables and heavy puddings, while celebrating the classic greasy spoon café and simple comfort foods like chips and tinned tomatoes.

The conversation turns to his career highlights and stage appearances. Perry reflects on winning the Turner Prize, calling it “the whole cake shop,” and says the recognition gave him confidence to create his best work.

He also discusses The Masked Singer, where he beat Macy Gray, and his new tour Are You Good, which he describes as deliberately unscripted to keep a sense of chaos and spontaneity.

Elsewhere, he shares opinions on procrastination, the changing art world, visiting galleries and what makes the perfect pie.

His ideal version comes with pastry top and bottom, plenty of gravy and a proper steak and kidney filling.
