Blinding Talent podcast discusses realities of the modern music business

The latest episode of The Blinding Talent Music Industry Podcast sees founder Mark Adams joined by Lemontank creator and former BBC Radio 1 producer, Jacob Rickard.

Having worked with some of the UK’s biggest artists and presenters, he talks to Mark about the challenges and opportunities facing artists in today’s fast-changing music business.

Rickard, who spent twelve years at Radio 1 producing for Annie Mac and Zane Lowe, argues that viral moments on TikTok or other platforms should not be mistaken for a long-term plan.

“Virality isn’t a business model. It’s the music, the story, and the community that really make an artist cut through,” he said. Instead, he stressed the importance of emotional connections between artists and their audiences.

The conversation also highlights the difference between followers and fans, with both Rickard and Adams agreeing that genuine communities have more value than chasing large numbers that do not translate into loyalty.

They also discuss the evolving role of radio, with Rickard bringing insights from his Lemontank writer room, where young people help guide campaigns for artists, labels and brands.

Adams, who helped launch the careers of stars including Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa and Rag’n’Bone Man during his time at Channel 4, added: “Having both grown up in the worlds of radio and TV, Jacob and I have seen firsthand how audiences change and why young voices must be central to every decision in this industry.”
