Brown Girls Do It Too podcast announce live tour

BBC Asian Network’s Brown Girls Do It Too, the award-winning podcast, is to go on tour for the first time.

Hosts Poppy Jay and Rubina Pabani, explore the messy realities, fantasies, sexpectations and navigating life and relationships as British Asian women.

Now, the BBC Sounds podcast will take to the stage – kicking off with two exclusive ‘work in progress’ performances at London’s prestigious Soho Theatre on Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 December ahead of its national tour in 2022.

Developed by production company Tilted, Brown Girls Do It Too LIVE is a show inspired by the critically acclaimed podcast, winner of the Podcast of the Year at the British Podcast Awards 2020 and of the Best Podcast honour at the 2021 Asian Media Awards.

Poppy and Rubina present an evening of sketches, songs, and a no-holds-barred discussion about their experiences – from first orgasms and loves, racism and family politics, and on the backlash they have faced by doing the podcast.

“This stage version of Brown Girls Do It Too is like our podcast, on acid”, says Rubina Pabani. “I have no idea what this is going to be like, but I imagine it’s like the first time you try anal. Nerve-racking, but has the potential to be quite fun?

“We’re not “theatre people”, but we also didn’t think we were “podcast people”, and that seems to have worked out alright.

“Either way, an 8-month pregnant lady will be on a space hopper – perverts would pay tons to see that.”

Tilted will be touring the show round the country in autumn 2022 and is looking for ambassadors from the Asian community to be part of the show’s development. Travel and accommodation for ten people will be covered for them to come from around the UK to watch the work-in-progress at Soho Theatre. Tilted is keen for feedback on the show’s content and will work closely with its team of ambassadors to promote the show locally next year.

Sam Hodges, founder of Tilted commented: “Poppy and Rubina are two of the most remarkable women I’ve ever met. From our very first conversation, it was clear that they didn’t want the show just to be your standard live podcast fare but something altogether more playful, nuanced and form-breaking.

“When I first heard the podcast, I was blown away by their ability to make me laugh one minute and speak important truths with an eye-opening frankness the next. When I met them, it was clear that the show would do both and go even further – packed full of their ideas, creativity and charisma.”

Tickets for Brown Girls Do It Too LIVE: Work In Progress are on sale now from the Tilted website.
