CNN podcast investigates suspicious death of James Brown

The James Brown Mystery investigates the suspicious death of the Godfather of Soul.

From CNN Audio, the 8-episode limited-series podcast seeks to find out if the legendary musician was murdered.

The story begins almost 40 years ago, when a songwriter found herself in James Brown’s inner circle, but the relationship nearly destroyed her career.

Decades later, she’s trying to solve the mystery of James Brown’s death…and her own life.

CNN reporter Thomas Lake had a phone call from a circus singer in 2017 who told him that James Brown didn’t die of natural causes in 2006 but was murdered.

After months of calls from the circus singer, Lake flew to Chicago to meet Jacque Hollander in person. She reveals proof of her connection to Brown and shows Lake a videotape of a polygraph test she took in 1995 that was administered by a former FBI agent.

Lake published an exclusive CNN investigative series, Lost in the Woods with James Brown’s Ghost in 2019, which explored unanswered questions around the singer’s death and the people still calling for an autopsy and criminal investigation.

This is the first podcast hosted and reported by Lake. It delves deeper into the story, covering Brown’s complicated past, the mysterious death of his third wife, and the biggest questions surrounding his demise.

The first two episodes of The James Brown Mystery are available now, with new episodes every Friday on CNN Audio or wherever you get your podcasts.
