Award-winning foodie podcast, Dish from Waitrose has welcomed Graham Norton as its latest guest.
The comedian and broadcaster joins hosts Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett OBE for a wide-ranging conversation about food, drink, and life in the spotlight.
Norton, known for his quick wit and The Graham Norton Show, covered everything from his love of potatoes to his dislike of grapefruit and oysters.
He also spoke about his first real “food awakening,” sparked by a French exchange trip where he was told by his mother to “eat everything,” leading to some memorable encounters with cheeses and even tête de veau.
When it comes to drinks, Norton revealed that his current go-to is a wet martini, inspired by daytime host Sally Jessy Raphael. “I tried it, and I liked it,” he admitted, adding it to his already colourful list of culinary preferences.
The conversation turned to Waitrose, with Norton recalling an occasion where he spoke at length about a pre-prepared lamb shank at a BAFTA event, to the point where a representative “made apologies and walked off.”
He also shared how he still sneaks the occasional scotch egg or sausage roll into his otherwise vegan household, marvelling at the mystery of the deep-fried snack.
Norton contrasted his radio career with Chris Evans, noting their listeners’ very different morning priorities: “His were calling in about training for the marathon. Mine were just like, ‘Really hungover after a barbeque.’”
Reflecting on his career in entertainment, he touched on his long-running chat show, recalling Julia Roberts’ first appearance and her unexpected fangirling over Cher, which “gave the couch a shape.” He also confirmed that Brad Pitt has never appeared on the show, despite several near misses.
Norton also discussed his podcast Wanging On with Maria McErlane, describing it as “the most low-concept podcast imaginable – just me and Maria talking.” He said the duo’s tough-love approach to listener problems harks back to his time as an agony uncle.
