Guardian to record Football Weekly podcast live at SXSW

The Guardian will record Football Weekly live in the United States for the first time as part of its 2026 SXSW programme.

The live taping of Football Weekly takes place at 11.30am CDT on Monday 16 March in Austin, with hosts Max Rushden and Barry Glendenning previewing the 2026 World Cup in North America.

They will be joined by Brendan Hunt, co-creator and Coach Beard in Apple TV’s Ted Lasso, alongside the Guardian’s senior US sports editor Alexander Abnos.

The session forms part of the Guardian’s wider presence at SXSW this year, which also includes a featured conversation between US editor Betsy Reed and student activist Mahmoud Khalil.

There will also be a discussion with journalist Carter Sherman, co-host of the Guardian’s forthcoming US video podcast exploring the sex lives of Gen Z.

In addition to its on-stage programme, the Guardian is running an out-of-home campaign across SXSW venues in Austin, building on its earlier US campaign, “The whole picture.”

Steve Sachs, the Guardian’s US managing director, said: “Our expanded presence at SXSW reflects the Guardian’s commitment to meeting audiences where they are – not just online, but in the heart of cultural conversation.

“We see enormous value in creating spaces where the authenticity and authority of our journalism can be felt in person and how that can drive innovation and loyalty across our business.”

Sara Badler, the Guardian’s chief advertising officer, North America, added: “The Guardian’s lineup for SXSW 2026 is a powerful showcase of our expanding footprint across culture, sports, and politics.

“For brands and partners, it’s an incredible opportunity to align with the momentum and ambition driving one of the fastest-growing news outlets in America, and we’re thrilled to be working with SXSW to bring these conversations to new and engaged audiences.”
