Independent Podcast Awards 2024 winners revealed
More than 300 people from the indie podcasting community gathered in London last night for the Independent Podcast Awards 2024.
Taking place at Kings Place and hosted by Chinny Ukata and Astrid Madimba, It’s a Continent was named the overall Independent Podcast of the Year, after also winning the Best History and Best Educational: World, Business & Financial Podcast categories.
The awards were launched in 2023 by whynow Media and Verbal Diorama, to celebrate independent podcasts that don’t get financial backing from big brands or have celebrities to front them.
With a total of 28 categories, It’s A Continent was a stand-out on the night winning two categories, and the overall Independent Podcast of the Year title.
101 Part Time Jobs with Giles Bidder took home trophies for the Best Music Podcast and Best Jingle categories. The Apocalypse Players retained the title for Best Gaming Podcast.
The Book Review Podcast: For Kids By Kids was fronted by the youngest winner of the night. Ten-year-old Krishna Murali won the Best Educational: Children & Young Adults category for his podcast that encourages his peers to get off their devices and to read books instead.
Wrestling with the Champ won the Best Sports Podcast category, and probably the best on stage acceptance with host Ant McGinley ripping off his shirt in true wrestler style!
The judges said of It’s A Continent: “The coverage of African nations, culture and history in UK education is sparse, making this podcast essential listening.
“It’s instantly interesting, the hosts are charming and fun, and easily mix the serious nature of some of the topics they talk about with humour and wit.
“Each episode was fascinating and well researched, and was presented in a relaxed, informal style. And all done by the hosts themselves. A true indie show that deserves to be crowned the Independent Podcast of the Year.”
The show will see its name up in lights on billboards in Leicester Square and East London from Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 October thanks to the team at Spotify.
Winners will also receive a range of additional perks from sponsors Acast, Adelicious, Advertising Week, AudioUK, Captivate, Kings Place, Pod Bible, Podnews, Podknows Podcasting, the Podcasting, Seriously Fund, Rusty Quill and Spotify.
Apple and Spotify have both created playlists for the winners on their platforms.
