The Indypod Census is the first research study aimed at better understanding the independent podcasting market.
It’s been set up by Scottish podcasting company The Podcast Host, who have also teamed up with other independent and international podcast organisations across the industry to reach a wider demographic of podcasters. Partners include She Podcasts, Afros and Audio and CastNews Brazil.
The census is purposely concise to encourage a higher response rate. There are 21 questions covering several aspects throughout the podcast creation process, touching on topics such as purpose, behaviour, costs, promotion, challenges and vision.
Founder and CEO of The Podcast Host, Colin Gray, suggests that, currently, much of the research around podcasting is skewed towards mid-level and highly successful podcasts.
While he thinks it’s understandable, given how easier it is to reach and engage podcasts run as or for a business, he also believes it misses a huge section of the industry, when you consider beginners, part-timers, and side hustlers in podcasting.
This is why he says it’s important to seek out the ‘Indypodder’ to participate in a research study that will ultimately benefit them and help to shape the industry with their values at heart.
“As a company, we set out to support and empower independent podcasters (or ‘Indypodders’!) from day one, Colin explains. “The Indypod Census is the next stage of that. We want to hear the voice of every indypodder, in as many corners of the industry as possible, so that we can help shape the evolution of our industry.
“If we can gather those insights, those reflections and gauge their mood, then it can help to craft an industry that serves them, and that anyone can be proud to be a part of,” he adds.
The IndyPod Census 2022 is supported by PodcastingToday, it’s open until 6 December and takes around 7 minutes to complete. Have your say by clicking on the image below:
The IndyPod Summit will take place online on 26 January, where there will be a deep dive into the results of the census to get a better understanding of industry trends and what to expect in 2023.
Workshops will be held at the summit, with speakers sharing best practices to improve workflow, increase listeners and connect more with an audience. There will also be the chance to join panel discussions about the future of independent podcasting with an interactive Q&A so you can ask your most pressing questions.
