Comedian Joe Lycett joins Angela Scanlon for the first episode of series three of the Thanks a Million podcast to explore his personal Gratitude Lists to find out the things that have shaped his life.
He reveals that heโs grateful for the bad gigs because he can look and learn why they went wrong or that he shouldnโt have agreed to do it in the first place.
The lockdown has given Joe some breathing space: โBefore lockdown I realised I hadn’t really had that for years, a block of time where I thought what do I want to do today?โ, he says.
Itโs been a bit of a revelation for him and he tells Angela how itโs going to change him from now on because he was beginning to suffer from anxiety by putting too much pressure on himself.
Although as a stand-up, Joe loves making jokes, he doesnโt like being confrontational, so thinks he may be guilty of pleasing others too much rather than himself.
Because of his busy lifestyle, being pulled around in different directions, he feels like itโs easy lose yourself and tells Angela what he did about it.
He also speaks about not letting possessions become obsessions: โI bought this house, I bought a Lexus, I bought things. They belong to me. But even my body doesn’t belong to me forever. The whole things borrowed.
โI don’t want to cling on. So I want to be grateful for these things and I want to be thankful, but I don’t want to be so thankful that it becomes an obsession,โ he says.
One thing that people might not know about Joe is that heโs very interested in Quantum Physics and he reveals how it makes him view lifeโฆ and death. One of his friends died at the start of lockdown and he describes why he thinks it has made him โjust go for itโ in life.
