Play On Podcasts reimagines Richard the Third in modern English

The acclaimed Play On Podcast Series has released its latest production, a new take on Shakespeare’s Richard the Third.

Written by William Shakespeare and translated into modern English verse by playwright Migdalia Cruz, the drama is reimagined against the backdrop of San Francisco’s Latin Punk movement.

The story follows Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who plots to seize the throne from his ailing brother, King Edward.

His ruthless ambition sees him framing his brother Clarence for treason and manipulating Lady Anne into marriage, despite being responsible for the deaths of her husband and son.

Shakespeare’s classic tale of power, betrayal and manipulation is retold with contemporary language, making it accessible to new audiences while retaining its dark intensity.

The production is directed by Lisa Rothe, with original music composition and sound design by David Molina and Lindsay Jones, mixing modern soundscapes with Shakespeare’s timeless themes.

The adaptation highlights the resonance of Richard’s rise and fall in a modern cultural setting, while staying true to the play’s exploration of political intrigue and moral corruption.

Produced by Next Chapter Podcasts with support from The Hitz Foundation, Richard the Third is the latest in the Play On Shakespeare initiative, which commissions translations of Shakespeare’s works into modern verse by acclaimed playwrights.
