Spotify Premium launches lossless audio for high quality streaming

Spotify has confirmed the rollout of lossless audio for Premium subscribers, delivering music in the highest available sound quality on the platform.

The feature, long requested by listeners, is now live in more than 50 markets including the UK, US, Australia, Japan and Germany, with others set to follow through October.

Premium users will receive a notification in the app once lossless is available. Tracks can be streamed in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC, providing more detail and clarity across most of Spotify’s catalogue.

Gustav Gyllenhammar, Vice President of Subscriptions, said: “The wait is finally over; we’re so excited lossless sound is rolling out to Premium subscribers. We’ve built this feature in a way that prioritises quality, ease of use, and clarity at every step.”

The addition of lossless audio joins a range of new Premium features including DJ, Jam, AI Playlist, Mix, and daylist, alongside curated playlists from Spotify’s global editorial team. The company says this expansion underlines its commitment to enhancing the Premium experience.

Users can adjust sound quality settings individually for Wi-Fi, cellular streaming, and downloads. The new Lossless option appears alongside Low, Normal, High, and Very High. Listeners will also see a Lossless indicator in the Now Playing view when the mode is active.

Lossless playback is supported across mobile, desktop, and tablet apps, as well as many Spotify Connect-enabled devices from Sony, Bose, Samsung and Sennheiser. Support for Sonos and Amazon devices will arrive next month.

Spotify recommends wired headphones or speakers via Wi-Fi or Spotify Connect for the smoothest listening, as Bluetooth connections do not currently support full lossless audio.
