Golden Globe winners Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty joined Nick and Angela on Dish from Waitrose this week.
They talked about their return in A Thousand Blows, acting journeys, adventurous eating, cooking, and life on set.
Reflecting on the Golden Globes, Erin described the day as “an all-day situation” ending with a dance party, while Stephen recalled meeting Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Queen Latifah and Sean Penn, saying it “still blows my mind” that such stars spoke about their work. He added, “I don’t even prepare a speech…once you do, then it’s over.”
The pair also discussed food. Stephen shared his love for mille-feuille, explaining how it reminded him of school treats and family traditions.
Erin revealed her devotion to curry, particularly Thai red curry, and admitted she avoids making it herself to avoid messing it up.
Both spoke about their adventurous approach to trying unusual foods, with Erin even trying snails, while Stephen recounted an unforgettable chicken curry experience in Thailand.
Cooking at home also featured in the conversation. Erin has recently started cooking more for her partner, enjoying experimenting with pies, lasagne, and prawn toast tacos.
Stephen shared his appreciation for his wife Hannah’s cooking, highlighting her pan of scouse as a standout, while recalling the family recipe with stewing steak, potatoes, turnip, carrots, onions, and pickled cabbage.
Both actors reflected on how they got into acting. Stephen cited his school teacher Mr Thacker and youth theatre experiences that sparked his passion, while Erin credited drama teacher Guy Williams and a youth theatre trip to Bosnia at eighteen as the moment she knew she wanted to act professionally.
The conversation turned to A Thousand Blows. Stephen described the back-to-back filming of seasons one and two, building the set brick by brick, and learning boxing and pickpocketing for the series. Erin spoke about joining the project immediately after being approached, calling it “such a special project.”
Finally, the pair shared personal favourites from childhood. Stephen loved his mother’s chops with chips and rice, while Erin recalled her head of sixth form, Romesh Ranganathan, who once removed her from English Literature for not reading the books – a memory she recounts fondly.
