The History Podcast to launch The Magnificent O’Connors series

The History Podcast is set to release a new series exploring the true story of the O’Connor family and their decades-long fight to overturn what they believe was a miscarriage of justice.

The six-part box set, The Magnificent O’Connors begins with the case of Jimmy O’Connor, a small-time criminal who was arrested for the murder of ‘Donk’ Ambridge.

He narrowly escaped execution, but his conviction cast a long shadow that followed him for the rest of his life.

Twenty-five years later, Jimmy had reinvented himself on the island of Mykonos, where he became a sought-after television scriptwriter.

He moved in the same circles as The Rolling Stones and Jackie Onassis, while living with his wife Nemone Lethbridge, one of the UK’s first female barristers and a defender of the Kray twins.

Despite their success and glamour, the conviction remained unresolved and shaped the family’s story for generations.

The new podcast follows Jimmy’s son Ragnar O’Connor, his brother Milo and their 93-year-old mother as they make one last attempt to uncover the truth.

The History Podcast: The Magnificent O’Connors, which shines a light on one of the most remarkable untold sagas of modern British life, will be available on BBC Sounds from Monday 29 September and broadcast on BBC Radio 4 from Wednesday 1 October.
