Ten years of Podium.me empowering young people through podcasting

Charity broadcaster Podium.me was set up in 2012 to provide an independent platform for young voices.

Over the last ten years each young person who applied was given a role and mentored into the next step of their career, with over 2000 of them growing up with the Podium.me team.

Podium.me recently celebrated its tenth anniversary at Thomson Reuters in Canary Wharf, hosted by trustee Jane Barrett and sponsored by MyBnk, focusing on achievements over the past decade.

Panels included industry insights from Suna Erdem and trustee Jonathan Paterson, and The Future of News featuring 4 students in year 12 from Global Academy. Former Podium journalists Karkiu Tang from Hong Kong and Kabir Hussain shared memories from 9 years ago.

The event was organised by the Podium.me team, featuring Camilla Byk MBE, co-founder with Annabel Merrett.

Camilla received the MBE this year for her services to young people and broadcast journalism and was invited to the Queen’s Funeral last week along with other recent MBE recipients. She was made a Fellow of the Radio Academy in 2021 and has a background in languages and media.

Podium.me has a ‘no selection, no rejection’ approach and is for young people between the ages of 15 and 25. It has won ARIA awards for Innovation and Audio Drama and continues to challenge the media to represent young people accurately and fairly.

Graduates from Podium now work across the world in Nigeria, the World Service, Canada, UK production companies and marketing companies.

Podcasts and audio dramas created by young people from the Podium.me network are available on Podium.me and SoundCloud.
