Oxford Road reveals best-selling podcasts are independent

Independent podcasts are driving the strongest advertising results, according to new data from Oxford Road’s ORBIT rankings.

The agency analysed more than $1.6 billion in campaign data across over 500 advertisers, finding that 80% of top performing podcasts are produced outside major networks.

Rankings are based on actual sales results rather than audience size, highlighting how independent creators are delivering measurable outcomes for brands.

Oxford Road says these creators often own their audiences directly and build stronger trust, which translates into higher response rates.

Four distinct audience categories emerged from the analysis. The largest was “Build”, accounting for 40% of top shows, covering education, business and self-improvement content. These audiences are described as highly engaged and more likely to act on advertising messages.

“Align” content, including politics and news, made up 27% of the rankings. Oxford Road suggests independently produced shows in this category benefit from being more opinionated, which can strengthen audience connection where brand fit is appropriate.

“Unwind” podcasts, such as comedy, history and documentaries, represented more than a quarter of top performers. The report highlights the importance of storytelling and tone in driving listener engagement, particularly for lifestyle focused advertisers.

The highest performing category overall was “Fandom”, led by a games podcast. Oxford Road says strong community identity and close relationships between hosts and listeners create more effective advertising environments, with brands encouraged to treat placements as community sponsorships.

Kyle Jelinek, Vice President of Client Services at Oxford Road, said: “People don’t think of independence as a performance advantage, but that’s exactly what ORBIT shows.

“Creators who own their audience and control their content build the kind of trust that drives results.”

The findings were generated using ORBIT, Oxford Road’s measurement platform, which tracks customer acquisition costs, return on ad spend and sales outcomes across campaigns.

Oxford Road plans to release updated rankings each month, including insights by genre, market and emerging shows, using its database across podcasting, streaming audio, radio and creator led video.
