Supporting Cast is now delivering subscriber only video podcasts directly inside Spotify through the platform’s Distribution API.
The update means paying subscribers can watch exclusive video episodes in the Spotify app after linking their Spotify account to a Supporting Cast powered subscription.
Audio and video content will sit together in the same library without requiring listeners to switch platforms.
Supporting Cast first worked with Spotify on Open Access in 2021, allowing premium podcast subscribers to access ad free episodes within Spotify. The new integration extends that system to video content.
David Stern, Chief Executive Officer of Supporting Cast, said creators are increasingly exploring video as part of their subscription strategies.
“Our partners initially focused their subscription programs on gated audio,” said David. “Now that they’re investing in video, we expect their exclusive content will follow a similar trajectory.”
David also said Supporting Cast expects growth through open podcast ecosystems rather than keeping video content locked into individual proprietary apps.
The first launch partners include Libero and Legacy. Additional publishers due to launch later this quarter include Goalhanger, Jim Harold’s Campfire and Betches Media.
Jim Harold said video helps strengthen relationships between hosts and audiences while making premium content easier to discover inside Spotify.
Spotify introduced its Distribution API on 7 January this year, initially focusing on open video publishing for hosting partners.
Supporting Cast says its integration is the first to use the API for subscriber only video distribution.
The company says podcasters can upload video through the Supporting Cast dashboard without changing their existing publishing workflow.
Episodes containing video will automatically appear as video on Spotify, while audio only uploads continue to publish normally.
Listeners can switch between watching and listening inside Spotify, while publishers can track performance using both the Supporting Cast dashboard and Spotify for Creators.
