The Telegraph’s new podcast series, The Diamond King, reveals how journalists Mick Brown and Robert Mendick tracked down fugitive diamond dealer Nirav Modi in London.
The four-part series, hosted by Mick and Robert, explores the investigation that led to Modi’s arrest and the ongoing legal battle over his extradition to India.
In March 2019, Mick and Robert waited in Soho Square, London, hoping to locate Modi, who was wanted for defrauding Punjab National Bank of £1.3 billion, the largest bank fraud in India’s history.
Interpol had issued a Red Notice for Modi, and his whereabouts were unknown for a year until The Telegraph’s investigation traced him to a central London address, where he was running a new diamond business.
Despite being located and arrested, Modi remains in a British prison seven years later, with his extradition to India still unresolved.
The podcast, released on Fridays from today, 10 July, details Modi’s rise and fall, the investigative work that led to his capture, and the complex extradition process.
Mick said: “Finding India’s most wanted man was one of the most challenging investigations Rob and I had ever been engaged in, and the saga of his extradition is an extraordinary story of legal process.”
Robert added: “It was incredible that one of the world’s most wanted men was hiding in plain sight in London. It’s almost just as incredible that more than seven years after we caught him, Modi is still in Britain in jail, still to face justice in his native India.”
The Diamond King is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and all major podcast platforms.
