Christiane Amanpour reveals more cancer treatment in podcast interview

Christiane Amanpour has revealed she is receiving further treatment for cancer and says it is being well managed.

Speaking on Changing the Ovarian Cancer Story with host Hannah Vaughan Jones, Amanpour was joined by her oncologist Dr Angela George from The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, who confirmed the journalist’s relapsed ovarian cancer is currently in remission under immunotherapy.

Amanpour, one of the world’s most respected broadcasters, was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2021.

She underwent surgery and chemotherapy that year, sharing her journey publicly on her CNN International show Amanpour.

This second episode of the podcast, titled I’d Never Asked for Help Before, explores early detection, treatment advances, and the emotional impact of living with cancer.

In the conversation, Amanpour spoke movingly about accepting support during her illness. She said: “I had never actually asked for help before and when I did, I got it, from my family, from my friends, from my colleagues, from everybody… it really sustained me because it’s not just the illness, it’s your state of mind, it’s everything.”

Dr George explained that immunotherapy is not suitable for all women with ovarian cancer but works effectively in Amanpour’s case.

“It basically alerts the body to the fact that cancer cells are there and teaches the body to destroy them,” she said.

World Ovarian Cancer Coalition CEO Clara MacKay praised Amanpour’s openness, saying her story highlights global inequalities in diagnosis and treatment: “Her voice, together with Dr George’s insights, underscores why our work is so vital,” she said.

Reflecting on her care team, Amanpour spoke warmly about the female doctors who treated her, saying she felt deeply confident in their hands.

“It ended up being very important because I was completely relaxed and confident in their hands,” she said.

The episode is available now as part of the Changing the Ovarian Cancer Story series and can be watched on YouTube or listened to wherever you get your podcasts.
