Modern verse Much Ado About Nothing podcast launches first episode

Play On Podcasts series, Much Ado About Nothing brings a modern English verse translation of Shakespeare’s comedy written by Ranjit Bolt.

The story is set on the French Riviera at the height of post-war euphoria, a backdrop that highlights the play’s mix of celebration, tension and shifting relationships.

This version follows Shakespeare’s romantic comedy about bantering rivals who become reluctant lovers, alongside young sweethearts whose plans nearly fall apart due to jealous interference.

As the plot moves through a maze of friendship, mischief, misunderstanding, passion and eventual forgiveness, the modern verse keeps the structure clear while remaining faithful to the original meaning.

The series is directed by Brendon Fox, whose approach focuses on clarity and performance detail while staying close to the atmosphere described in the official blurb.

His direction supports the movement between the play’s humour and conflict, and highlights the contrast between characters navigating rivalry, rumour and affection.

The production also features original music composition and sound design by Lindsay Jones, whose work shapes the tone of each scene and places listeners directly within the world of the story.

The Play On Podcasts release is part of a wider series created to present Shakespeare’s plays in modern English verse while keeping the dramatic structure and intentions clear for listeners.

This adaptation follows that model by offering a version of Much Ado About Nothing that stays true to the source while using contemporary language to support understanding of the plot and characters.

Much Ado About Nothing is produced by Next Chapter Podcasts as part of the Play On Podcast Series. The project is made possible by the support of The Hitz Foundation, whose backing enables the ongoing creation of these modern-verse audio adaptations.
