Rhodri Talfan Davies appointed BBC Deputy Director-General

Editorial strategy across the BBC’s radio, television and online services will now be overseen by Rhodri Talfan Davies in a newly confirmed senior leadership role.

The BBC has appointed him as its Deputy Director-General following a competitive internal recruitment process. He takes up the position with immediate effect and will serve on both the BBC Board and Executive Committee.

As Deputy Director-General, Rhodri Talfan Davies will act as second-in-command to Director-General Matt Brittin. His responsibilities include shaping and delivering the BBC’s editorial strategy, maintaining public trust in the Corporation and driving editorial standards across all BBC output.

The role also includes ensuring the BBC responds quickly and effectively to editorial and operational issues when they arise.

Rhodri has worked at the BBC for more than 28 years and has held a range of senior positions. Most recently, he served as Director of Nations. Rhuanedd Richards will continue to lead the Nations division on an interim basis.

Matt Brittin, BBC Director-General, said: “Rhodri was the outstanding choice among several very strong candidates. He is a trusted, experienced leader.”

Matt added that Rhodri is “steeped in the BBC’s public service mission” and shares his ambition to reinvent the organisation for the future.

Responding to the appointment, Rhodri said: “I’m honoured to have been appointed Deputy Director-General. The BBC is a beacon of trust and excellence for millions of people here in the UK and globally.”

He added that he is looking forward to working with teams across the organisation to promote high editorial and creative standards while upholding the BBC’s values across its services.
