Sean Bean joins award-winning Get Birding podcast as new host

Sean Bean has been announced as the new host of the award-winning podcast Get Birding.

The acclaimed actor is taking on his first podcast hosting role, fronting a new always-on series aimed at everyone from complete beginners to experienced birdwatchers.

The first episode available today, is timed ahead of the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch taking place this weekend.

Bean, who is a two-time BAFTA TV and International Emmy winner and globally recognised for his roles in The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, is also a lifelong birding enthusiast.

He has spoken about discovering birdwatching as a teenager while growing up on a Sheffield estate, spending hours exploring local gardens and nearby fields with friends and binoculars in hand.

“It might come as a surprise to many, but I was a keen birder as a teenager growing up on a Sheffield estate,” Bean said. “In a busy world, birdwatching is a great way to connect with nature and relax, and I’m excited to go on this adventure with the Get Birding community.”

The new series will hear Bean sharing his own birding stories alongside those of his celebrity guests, starting with Elbow frontman and BBC Radio 6 Music presenter Guy Garvey in episode one.

Returning to the podcast is Dr Mya-Rose Craig, also known as Birdgirl, who hosted the first series and now takes on the role of mentor, guiding Bean through practical ‘how to’ sessions covering topics such as bird feeders and caring for birds in colder weather.

At just 23, Mya-Rose is already one of the most experienced birdwatchers in the world, having become the youngest person to spot more than half of the planet’s bird species at the age of 17.

She said working with Bean brings a fresh perspective to the podcast, adding that birding should feel open to everyone, no matter where they live or how much experience they have.

The fortnightly podcast will also include regular features such as birdsong of the week with sound artist and nature beatboxer Jason Singh, mindful bird poetry, and practical tips listeners can use straight away.

Produced by Peanut & Crumb, its Co-Founder and Creative Director Jane Gerber said the move to an always-on format marked an exciting new chapter for the podcast, with Bean positioned as a relatable role model for connecting with nature.

Katie Derham, also Co-Founder of Peanut & Crumb, added that Get Birding is part of wider multi-platform plans, with more content to be announced in the coming months.

Alongside the podcast, the Get Birding YouTube channel will expand with additional birding content, while a new members club called The Flock is launching soon, described as a dedicated content and community hub for birdwatchers.

Recorded outdoors in nature, Get Birding will help all generations learn more about the birds around them, supporting wellbeing while encouraging greater care for the environment.
