Broadcaster Kirsty Young has launched her first podcast, Young Again on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds.
The theme of the podcast is about having a conversation with your younger self and what would you tell them.
Kirsty revisits the pivotal moments in her guests lives, reflecting on what they wish they had known at the time and discovers the honest – and surprising – advice they would give their younger selves.
The first episode features model Linda Evangelista, who talks about what she has learned from her life so far.
After a career of 40 years as one of the first international supermodels, she reflects on listening to your parents, the infamous “We don’t wake up for less than 10,000 dollars a day” quote and opens up about leaving what she describes as a ‘#MeToo marriage’ with her ex-husband who was accused of rape and sexual misconduct by seven women in 2020, before the investigation was closed without charges last month, admitting she regrets not speaking up at the time.
“Did I have #MeToo moments? Absolutely. I was in a #MeToo marriage. Absolutely,” she says. “It was… I kept quiet for many, many years. And The Guardian did a story on all the models.
“Only when speaking to the journalist did I find this out. And to think that I was married to him when all this was happening, is crazy. And there’s a side of me that thinks that if I would have spoken up and said something about what was happening to me, that maybe they would have come forward at that time. And the statute of limitations wouldn’t have run out.”
Following episodes include Academy Award winning actor Daniel Kaluuya, who recalls a moment with fellow actor Olivia Colman who helped him realise he didn’t need to go to drama school, and Jamie Oliver talking about what he learned from his early life living and working in his parents’ pub, his success from a very young age, his relationship with his wife Jools and the dreams they shared of running a pub together.
The first three episodes of Young Again are available now on BBC Sounds, with episodes broadcast weekly on BBC Radio 4 at 11:00am from today, 3 October.
