Dawn O’Porter discusses nature and nostalgia outdoors on Outsiding podcast

Dawn O’Porter shares personal stories about nature, childhood and creativity in the latest episode of the Outsiding podcast, hosted by Caitlin Moran and Adam Frost.

The writer, director and television presenter reflects on her connection to the outdoors, describing how growing up in Guernsey and Scotland shaped her appreciation for nature.

She recalls spending time on the cliffs of Guernsey with her dog, and says the landscape is filled with memories: “My soul is there on the cliffs of Guernsey. And it’s so beautiful and so emotive.”

She also discusses her experiences living in Los Angeles, contrasting the wild gardens of her former home with the more hands-on approach to gardening in the UK.

Dawn notes that in LA, it’s common for residents to have gardeners, while in London, tending to one’s own garden is more typical.

The conversation covers a range of topics, from Dawn’s pet tortoise and the challenges of finding dandelions for its diet, to her thoughts on fashion and dressing for outdoor activities.

She admits to packing thematically for trips and prefers to look presentable even when walking or camping.

Dawn opens up about her childhood, describing how moving in with her aunt and uncle at age ten changed her relationship with food.

She remembers elaborate family meals and the comfort they brought during a difficult time.

The episode also touches on Dawn’s work with the charity Choose Love, which was recently highlighted at a Harry Styles concert.

She describes the emotional impact of seeing the charity’s name displayed at Wembley Stadium, linking it to her own family’s involvement in its founding.

Other topics include her fondness for weeping willow trees, her dislike of hot summer weather, and her enjoyment of autumn and winter.

Dawn also shares her experiences with hay fever, meeting fans, and her role as a presenter on Classic FM. She explains how classical music helps her focus while writing, saying: “I just know that I love it. It’s really pacified.”
