Gloriously Unready podcast gives voice to families of transgender people

Josephine Hughes returns with the third series of her podcast Gloriously Unready, focusing on the human stories behind the contentious debates.

As the mother of two transgender daughters who revealed their identities just months apart aged 16 and 21, Josephine is familiar with the profound impacts these societal issues have on families both as a counsellor and a parent.

The new series will aim to bridge the gap between public perception and the private struggles and victories of transgender individuals, offering a compassionate glimpse into the lives shaped by these realities.

It includes compelling and often uncomfortable conversations with guests like Dr Lulu, a paediatrician who redefined her approach to parenting a transgender child, and Helen McCarthy, who navigates her young child’s gender identity.

Marie Manley shares her experiences as the wife of a transgender individual, adding depth to the discourse on late transitions.

The series also looks at neurodiversity and LGBTQ identities with guest Anna Hayward and includes an anonymous interview focusing on the risks of advocacy.

Josephine Hughes says: “I started this podcast because when I was supporting my own transgender children with their journeys there was little support for me as a parent and I wanted to make the podcast a safe place for conversations for families.

“This series tells the stories of different families and shows it’s not a one size fits all approach, but I hope that anyone in similar situations can take some advice and solace in the fact that you don’t have to do it alone.”

The first episode of series three is available on all major podcast platforms from today, Monday 29 April.
