New podcast marries science, culture and entertainment

Global mining group Rio Tinto has launched a new podcast which casts light on the often-overlooked origins of our everyday essentials.

Things You Can’t Live Without is a 10-episode podcast delving into the fundamental aspects of our daily lives, to look at items we may take for granted. It offers insights into their impact and the sustainable practices that might shape their future.

With our dependency on natural resources increasing as we transition to a lower-carbon world, the series aims to initiate thought-provoking conversations about the items we consider indispensable. From the digital dictionary to the bison bottle flask, the podcast will unravel the story behind these essentials, highlighting the raw materials and processes involved in their creation.

Hosted by award-winning materials scientist and comedian, Dr Anna Ploszajski, each episode will feature discussions with prominent figures from various fields, including literature, music, sports, entertainment, and food.

Guests will share the item they can’t live without and will be joined by a Rio Tinto expert to discuss their choice, while focusing on sustainability and innovation.

“Our podcast aims to spark curiosity and provoke thought about the materials that shape our world,” said Nigel Steward, Rio Tinto Chief Scientist. “By exploring the stories behind everyday objects and how to ensure their sustainable production, we hope to inspire listeners to consider their role in building a more resilient future.”

Episodes one and two of the of Things you Can’t Live Without are now available on all podcast platforms including Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts, with episodes released weekly.
