New podcast shares British veterans’ stories from Berlin Airlift mission

A new podcast tells the untold stories of British veterans who took part in the historic Berlin Airlift.

The Veterans’ Voice: Berlin Airlift marks nearly eighty years since one of the greatest humanitarian missions of the twentieth century.

The series is produced by Legasee Educational Trust, a charity dedicated to preserving and sharing the memories of UK military veterans.

Hosted by twenty-two-year-old Alfie Jepp, the series gives a new generation the chance to hear directly from the men and women who flew vital supplies into West Berlin during the Soviet blockade of 1948 to 1949.

At the height of the Cold War’s early tensions, British and Allied forces kept the city alive by air, delivering more than two point three million tonnes of food, coal, and medical supplies over eleven months.

The podcast captures the deeply personal accounts of the pilots, engineers, and ground crew who made this effort possible. Many of them were still teenagers or in their early twenties when they took on such immense responsibility.

Some of these interviews were recorded between 2013 and 2014, preserving memories that might otherwise have been lost.

For many veterans, the Berlin Airlift shaped their entire lives, and their stories offer fresh insight into an episode often summarised by numbers rather than people.

Alfie Jepp, who hosts the podcast, said: “Hearing these veterans’ stories has been life changing. They were in their late teens and twenties when they served, just like I am now, and yet they carried such enormous responsibility. Their stories deserve to be heard, not just as history, but as a living legacy.”

Martin Bisiker, Executive Producer and Founder of Legasee, added: “These men and women were part of one of the greatest logistical efforts in modern history, but their individual stories are rarely told.

“By sharing their memories now, we’re not just preserving history, we’re making sure future generations understand the courage, commitment, and humanity that defined this mission.”

The project is supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust.

New episodes of The Veterans’ Voice: Berlin Airlift are released weekly and can be found on all major podcast platforms.

The series is accompanied by a digital archive of filmed interviews, available on Legasee Educational Trust’s website.
