Season 14 of the hugely popular podcast How to Fail with Elizabeth Day has now launched with the first episode’s guest Simu Liu.
Hosted by award-winning author and journalist, Elizabeth Day, the podcast celebrates the things that haven’t gone right, and each week, a new interviewee explores what their failures taught them about how to succeed better.
Opening the new series is accountant turned Hollywood actor, Simu Liu, who joins Elizabeth to talk about his failed accountancy career, a formative heartbreak, and failing to get a part in Crazy Rich Asians.
Talking about missing out on the part, Simu says: “It was at a time that was very difficult for me, I was trying to figure out whether I could be the lead character or whether I could only be a supporting character for my entire career.
“We got ‘well Simu doesn’t have the X Factor’ or the ‘it factor’. And that was just such a crushing blow for me because I, again, I felt like I already worked so hard and I came so far and I trained as an actor and taken countless hours of class was like, ‘what is the it factor?’ like it just felt like someone was telling me that I just wasn’t good enough.”
Along the way, the pair discuss the white gaze, representation and marginalised Hollywood, his relationship with his parents, destiny and manifestation, his acting career including filming Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’, and of course, making an appearance on Selling Sunset.
Since launching in 2018, How to Fail with Elizabeth Day has had 25 million downloads and reaches one million listeners every month. Previous guests include Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Stanley Tucci, Dolly Alderton, Graham Norton, Holly Willoughby, Mabel, Nigel Slater and Jameela Jamil, to name a few.
It won the ‘Rising Star’ award at the 2019 British Podcast Awards and has spawned two bestselling books, as well as sell-out live shows at iconic venues The National Theatre and the London Palladium. Stylist magazine has credited Elizabeth Day and the How To Fail podcast with ‘revolutionising the way we see failure’.
