Sir David Attenborough on Call of the Wild with Cel Spellman and WWF

Call of the Wild, the new podcast from WWF hosted by Cel Spellman has launched with Sir David Attenborough as the first guest.

Sir David talks about how we depend on the natural world and are destroying ourselves by destroying it: “We’ve been so clever that we’ve found methods and ways and techniques of actually destroying nature in order to put in what we choose and that we’ve done it without thought over vast areas of the planet as though the planet belonged only to us.”

Having said that, he does explain why he has hope for the future because nature has an extraordinary ability to regenerate.

Sir David gives his number one tip to turn around the environmental crisis and start repairing our relationship with the natural world.

“I’ve never met a child older than three or four years who is not fascinated by the natural world,” says Sir David, but as we get older, we become interested in other things. “You get cars and motorbikes and one thing and another. But if you lose that pleasure of finding joy in the natural world and wanting to know how it works, you’ve lost a huge treasure,” he adds.

There’s also some advice to young people who want to make a difference, Sir David says: “Do what interest you. Do what you think you’re good at. And the odd thing is that nearly always what you’re good at is what you’re interested in. And so follow that. Follow that star.”

Cel Spellman then ends the episode reading out a letter he wrote to his hero, Sir David, thanking him for his work, his influence, and for giving nature and wildlife a voice like no other person has.
