Steve Backshall launches new nature podcast That’s Just Wild

BAFTA-winning adventurer Steve Backshall is teaming up with wildlife biologist Lizzie Daly and environmental journalist Sarah Roberts for a brand-new podcast.

From Fresh Air, That’s Just Wild is a twice weekly podcast aimed at anyone who’s fascinated by the natural world.

It will feature jaw-dropping stories, edge-of-your-seat wildlife encounters, and plenty of laughs from the first-hand experiences of three of the UK’s leading nature experts.

Each Tuesday, the main episode will include survival tales and unbelievable animal facts, while Fridays are reserved for a Q&A format where the hosts answer listener-submitted questions – from the sensible to the seriously strange.

The first episode is titled Freezing, with Steve sharing stories fresh from an Arctic expedition – including ice diving, animal adaptations to extreme cold, and a close encounter with walruses.

In the Q&A episode, the team tackles questions like Are octopuses aliens? and Should zoos still exist?

Steve Backshall said: “This is the podcast I’ve always wanted to make – wild stories from the front lines of nature, told with honesty, humour, and the occasional scar.

“We’ve all got so much love for the natural world, and That’s Just Wild is about sharing that passion in the most fun and fearless way possible.”

Lizzie Daly added: “Imagine wildlife, science and funny stories from expeditions in the field, all mixed into a raw and funny conversation… that’s this podcast. I love bringing science to life and this is the perfect space to do that in a truly engaging way.”

Sarah Roberts said: “We’re wired to share stories – it’s how humans connect. This show taps into that instinct with wild encounters, narrow escapes, and awe-inspiring facts that help us reconnect with the natural world. And right now, we need that connection more than ever.”

Neil Cowling, Founder of Fresh Air, said: “That’s Just Wild is exactly what podcasting should be – smart, surprising, and wildly entertaining.

“It offers a high-energy, positive lens on the planet’s wonders, channelling our fascination with wildlife to inspire and delight.”

That’s Just Wild launches 3 June, with new episodes every Tuesday and Friday across all podcast platforms, plus YouTube and TikTok for ‘snackable’ clips from the wild.
