ABC Audio launches two new true crime podcast projects

ABC Audio and 20/20 are expanding their true crime slate with the launch of two new podcasts this month.

On 16 September, the limited series Vanished: What Happened to Vanessa, hosted by John Quiñones, will launch. Later in the month, 20/20: The After Show will expand into video for the first time.

Vanished: What Happened to Vanessa revisits the 2020 murder of Private First Class Vanessa Guillén at Fort Hood Army base in Texas.

The series explores the family’s desperate search for answers after her disappearance and the wider reckoning within the military.

Listeners will hear exclusive interview audio from ABC News and 20/20’s original reporting alongside the latest updates from Guillén’s family.

20/20: The After Show, hosted by Deborah Roberts, will continue to deliver deeper insights into each 20/20 episode with additional interviews and behind-the-scenes details.

From 29 September, the series will be available as both an audio and video podcast, with video episodes launching on YouTube following the 48th season launch of 20/20 on 26 September.

ABC Audio has also confirmed a new format addition: bonus episodes for every limited series. Starting with Vanished: What Happened to Vanessa, Brad Mielke, host of Start Here, will join series hosts to respond to listener questions and explore themes in greater depth.

This year has already seen ABC Audio dominate the true crime charts. July was its most successful month on record, with titles such as Devil in the Desert, Bad Rap: The Case Against Diddy and What Happened to Holly Bobo? ranking at the top of both Apple and Spotify podcast charts.
