Investigative podcast reports on anti-LGBTQ ecosystem in America

UNCLOSETED with Spencer Macnaughton focuses on investigative reporting into anti-LGBTQ networks and policies across America.

The podcast was launched in March by Uncloseted Media, a nonprofit investigative newsroom covering LGBTQ issues.

Hosted by Spencer Macnaughton, the series examines the people, funding and political influence behind anti-LGBTQ activity in the United States.

Episodes also feature reporters from Uncloseted Media and outside contributors discussing original investigations and reporting.

The podcast is an investigative journalism project rather than a commentary show, with a focus on breaking stories connected to LGBTQ communities and policy debates.

Spencer Macnaughton is a Gracie Award winner and Emmy nominee who has worked with organisations including CBS News, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, NBC News and Rolling Stone. He also teaches LGBTQ journalism at New York University.

Guests so far have included Peppermint discussing trans representation in mainstream media and predicting that Paramount’s future owners could cancel or reshape RuPaul’s Drag Race, while Matt Bernstein spoke about younger queer audiences moving away from legacy media outlets.

Other episodes have featured James Dale reflecting on his landmark legal battle with the Boy Scouts and the latest debate surrounding Scouting America, alongside conversations with a Colorado father and son about surviving conversion therapy, and an interview examining ketamine addiction linked to growing up gay in a conservative Christian environment.

Upcoming episodes include an interview with Canadian adult film performer Milo Miles, who says he was detained by US Customs while travelling to the GayVN Awards before receiving a 10-year ban from entering the country.

Another, on 30 June, features drag performer Silky Nutmeg Ganache discussing life and performance in Texas during Donald Trump’s second term as president.

Spencer said he believes “the need for rigorous, nonpartisan journalism about the community has never been greater given the current climate in the U.S.”
