Comedian Sara Pascoe is the latest guest on Dish from Waitrose with Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett.
During the episode, Sara joins Nick and Angela for a wide-ranging conversation about comedy, touring life, vegan food and her long-standing love of Take That.
Reflecting on performing stand-up, Sara says one of the joys of the job is the welcome comedians receive before they even begin.
“This is the most amazing thing about being a comedian and why I think everyone should be a comedian, is that you just get a clap for arriving at work,” she says. “You haven’t done anything else but say your own name off stage and everyone’s like, yeah. It’s so nice.”
The comedian also recalls how deeply she and her sister were affected when Take That split up in the 1990s, describing themselves as devoted fans growing up in Romford.
“We were really devastated, me and my sister Cheryl,” she says, remembering how the news spread long before social media.
Food is central to the conversation, with Sara describing her enthusiasm for simple comfort dishes. She says soup is a particular favourite and explains why mashed potato beats chips when it comes to comfort food.
“I love soup, so much,” she tells the hosts, before adding that mash works perfectly alongside a traditional roast dinner.
Sara also talks about being vegan and how it contrasts with her husband’s approach to food. She explains that while she stopped eating meat as a child, she recognises that people make their own choices about diet.
“I love not eating animals, but I also understand that other people don’t care,” she says. “And that’s fine.”
Elsewhere in the episode, Sara reflects on how she first discovered stand-up comedy after initially aiming for a career in acting. She explains that performing her first stand-up set made everything suddenly feel clear.
“I was like, ‘Oh, this is what I’m supposed to do,’” she says.
The conversation also touches on life on tour, nerves before stepping on stage and her upcoming series Zero Stars with fellow comedian Roisin Conaty.
