A new 10-part podcast series, Inside The Murder Trial, has been commissioned to accompany the return of the acclaimed documentary series Murder Trial.
It will give listeners an in-depth look at two significant Scottish court cases.
The podcast is a co-commission between BBC Scotland and BBC Sounds, will provide unique access to the workings of the Scottish justice system, complementing the TV series produced by Firecrest Films.
The upcoming Murder Trial TV episodes will focus on the murder of Brian Low, a groundsman from Aberfeldy, and the landmark legal proceedings following the death of Kimberly Bruce in Dundee.
Brian Low was killed in February 2024 while walking his dog in Highland Perthshire. Initially treated as non-suspicious, the case turned into a murder investigation when shotgun pellets were discovered in his body bag.
David Campbell, a former gamekeeper and ex-colleague of Brian, now stands accused of the murder, with the case relying heavily on circumstantial evidence.
The second case, The Woman on the Bridge, centres on the death of 28-year-old Kimberly Bruce, who fell from a motorway bridge in July 2023.
Her husband, Lee, faces charges of culpable homicide and domestic abuse, marking the first prosecution of its kind in Scotland.
Prosecutors allege a pattern of domestic violence in the months leading up to Kimberly’s death, while the defence highlights complex aspects of her personal life.
Both the podcast and television series feature interviews with prosecution and defence teams, as well as access to police investigators and the families of the victims.
Louise Thornton, Head of Commissioning at BBC Scotland, said: “Murder Trial continues to provide the audience with exceptional access to Scotland’s courts and justice system. These two new cases are a compelling watch of the level audiences have come to expect from this award winning series.”
Emma Loach, Interim Head of Commissioning Documentaries at the BBC, commented: “Firecrest have raised the bar yet again – exploring some of the most complex legal cases of our time whist delivering on the brands’ reputation for compelling and emotive storytelling.”
The new podcast and TV episodes are the latest in a series that has previously covered cases such as Murder Trial: Girl in the River and Murder Trial: Body in the Warehouse.
