Deezer and Ausha introduce new energy-efficient podcast API

Podcast creators can now make sure new content reaches fans straight away as Deezer introduces a new API that lets podcast providers upload new episodes and info to the platform immediately.

The new API eliminates update crawling and unnecessary server requests, which reduces the carbon footprint of podcast streaming.

Ausha, a leading French podcast provider, is the first host to use Deezer’s new API. Ausha offers podcasters some of the most advanced tools dedicated to broadcasting, promoting and analyzing podcasts. This includes private podcasts and video clip editing capabilities. Podcasters also have access to detailed performance data that helps them design and share their content.

Today, Deezer updates podcasts on the platform by crawling a large number of podcast servers. This means that even when podcasts have no new information, they still have to be included in server requests. As a result, there’s usually a time delay between new podcast episodes being released and appearing on the platform.

Deezer and Ausha estimate that the old way of ingesting Ausha’s content used over 48 tonnes of carbon per year. By updating all of its RSS streams in one year, Ausha and Deezer will reduce this carbon cost by over 99% going forward.

Christian Jennewein, Director of Engineering at Deezer says: “We want Deezer to be efficient and sustainable. We’re always on the lookout for solutions that make things better for our users and partners, while reducing costs, time and energy spend.

“In this case, we managed to speed up podcast episode updates on Deezer by using a simple but innovative approach that requires less resources.

“Ausha has been the perfect partner in this process and is now one step ahead of the rest of the podcast industry. Our team will be working actively to make sure that other podcast providers also start using this technology. This will help listeners enjoy their shows faster, while reducing the overall carbon footprint of our industry.”

Franck FITOUSSI, Chief Product Officer at Ausha adds: “Our core values at Ausha have always been to build easy-to-use tools, accessible to everyone, in an eco-responsible approach. By helping our customers publish their podcasts in real time, we are also making the planet feel better.

“The push system produced in collaboration with Deezer will drastically reduce the amount of carbon used in our industry while eliminating all wait-to-publish processes. It’s the best of both worlds. We don’t want to be the only ones using this system, we encourage the entire industry to do the same and help reduce the carbon footprint for our children.”

Deezer’s new podcast API is available to all of its podcast providers, with the technology and its benefits introduced to its partners in the coming months.

Deezer says that it is the only company in the world to offer a greener and faster way to get podcasts to listeners.
