The British Podcast Awards are now open for entries in this year’s competition, with the awards being held in July.
Now in its fifth year, the British Podcast Awards highlights the breadth of UK podcasting. Previous big winners have included George the Poet, Chris and Rosie Ramsey, David Walliams, Deborah Frances-White and Greg James with podcasts ranging from My Dad Wrote A Porno and Dear Joan and Jericha to Brown Girls Do It Too and The Guardian’s Today in Focus.
This year Amazon Music is the headline sponsor for the Awards.
Craig Strachan, Head of Podcasts, Europe for Amazon Music says: “We’re thrilled to be headline sponsor of the British Podcast Awards this year and show our commitment to the UK podcast community. As a proud podcast service, we look forward to celebrating another fantastic year of podcasts and the role they have played in helping us all through this extraordinary period.”
Matt Hill co-founder of the British Podcast Awards says: “The podcast sector continues to grow and grow and especially as it has a new podcast section, we’re delighted to be welcoming Amazon Music as a key partner to the British Podcast Awards.”
In addition to the usual categories, there are a number of new ones this year including the Lockdown award, for shows that have served the nation well during COVID times as well as Best Documentary podcast to reflect the growing number of podcasts telling brilliant new stories. Readers of the popular weekly email Great British Podcasts will also create the shortlist for the new Best International podcast.
Once again, there will be a public vote for the Listeners’ Choice, supported by BBC Sounds. With over 220,000 votes last year, it’s the category that gets podcasters campaigning for votes on their shows and through social media.
Joining Amazon Music and BBC Sounds, other partners include Spotify, Acast, Sony Music’s 4th Floor Creative and Podfollow.
Matt Deegan, co-founder of the British Podcast Awards says: “We’re delighted that awards continue to be supported by a huge cross-section of the podcast sector. Whether you’re making a show in a kitchen, working for a large publisher, building a platform for listening or helping shows make money – we’re pleased that everyone can be involved in the British Podcast Awards”.
Entries for the British Podcast Awards, powered by Amazon Music, open today (Monday 22 February) and podcasters have until 29 March to enter at britishpodcastwards.com. The Listeners’ Choice supported by BBC Sounds will open for votes in May and the Awards will be held in July.
The British Podcast Awards are also behind Podcast Day 24, a new 24-hour virtual conference on Monday 7 June. Tickets are available at podcastday24.com.
