Female listeners driving growth in true crime podcasts on Spotify

Female listeners are now driving most engagement with true crime and paranormal podcasts on Spotify, according to the company.

Spotify says they account for nearly 70% of total hours spent with the genre, highlighting a clear shift in audience behaviour and shaping how content is produced and promoted.

One example is Let’s Get Haunted, which Spotify says has recorded strong growth over the past year. Streams for the show have increased almost fourfold since late 2025, while discovery on the platform has more than doubled over the same period.

The company says this performance reflects wider trends across the category. A largely female audience is leading consumption, particularly for series that follow structured, story-led formats designed to encourage repeat listening.

Spotify says there is also strong binge behaviour, with listeners engaging with multiple episodes in a single sitting. This pattern supports longer-form storytelling and encourages creators to develop more serialised content.

The company adds that audience engagement is extending beyond audio as well. Live events linked to these podcasts are attracting largely female audiences, suggesting that listeners are seeking deeper connections with shows and hosts.

Together, Spotify says these trends point to true crime and paranormal content as key areas of podcast growth. The category continues to benefit from consistent listening habits, strong audience loyalty and opportunities for expansion into live experiences.

For producers and platforms, the data underlines the importance of understanding audience demographics and adapting formats to meet listener expectations.
