Historian and bestselling author Dan Jones to host new history podcast

Somethin’ Else and Sony Music Entertainment are to launch new podcast This is History: A Dynasty to Die For.

Hosted by bestselling author and historian Dan Jones, series one tells the story of the most dysfunctional family of the Middle Ages – The Plantagenets. It tells tales of power, greed, religion and sex as this royal dynasty leaves a trail of destruction across Europe and beyond, their personal feuds and psychodramas playing out on an epic scale.

The series consists of 24 punchy 15 mins episodes, two released per week. Each episode is packed with drama, following Henry II – The Plantagenet’s answer to Succession’s Logan Roy – as he employs charisma, recklessness and strategic masterstrokes to win his crown. His children betray each other in their hunger to take him down, and the family matriarch, Eleanor of Aquitaine, navigates a man’s world to claim her own power.

Despite being England’s longest reigning and most ruthless dynasty, with moments that feel like they’ve been taken straight from The Sopranos playbook, the story of The Plantagenets is still relatively unknown.

Dan guides his listeners through this tumultuous period of history in a manner that’s at once compelling and dramatic, as well as accessible and family friendly. His narration is supported by an impressive, immersive soundscape and score, which transports listeners to medieval England.

A weekly bonus episode will be made available for subscribers, in which Dan divulges some more morsels of medieval gossip.

Dan is a New York Times bestselling author of historical non-fiction, including Magna Carta, The Templars, and The Plantagenets, described by The Wall Street Journal as “a real-life Game of Thrones”.

He’s written and hosted dozens of TV shows including the acclaimed Netflix/ Channel 5 series Secrets of British Castles. However, Dan is not your ‘typical historian’ – heavily tattooed and rarely seen without his leather jacket, he’s friends with Guns N’ Roses base guitarist Duff McKagan, and has taken the band on private historical tours before.

This is History: A Dynasty to Die For, launches on 20 September.
