History Hit builds July schedule around The Odyssey and podcasts

History Hit is dedicating much of its July output to The Odyssey, with new podcasts, documentaries and YouTube content linked to Homer’s epic and its enduring influence.

The programme of releases spans History Hit’s streaming service, podcast network and YouTube channels, with Dan Snow leading a number of the projects.

The focus coincides with the release of Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey and includes contributions from historians and classicists such as Mary Beard, Emily Wilson, Edith Hall and Steve Kershaw.

On 16 July, History Hit’s streaming service will launch a two part documentary series following Odysseus’ journey across the Mediterranean. Dan Snow visits locations from Troy to Ithaca while exploring the history and mythology behind the story.

The Odyssey also forms the basis of special podcast series across both Dan Snow’s History Hit and The Ancients.

Dan’s four part run begins on 6 July with an episode explaining Odysseus’ journey, before examining the relationship between myth and history and the realities of the Bronze Age world.

The Ancients, hosted by Tristan Hughes, will devote three episodes to the epic throughout July, culminating in a discussion assessing Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation.

Away from The Odyssey, History Hit’s streaming service will mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with a documentary presented by Dan Snow on 2 July.

The film features access to documents held by the National Archives and explores stories behind records connected to the founding of the United States.

Other podcast releases include a four part Black Flag series on Echoes of History, a three part American Outlaws series on American History Hit, and a crossover between After Dark and Betwixt the Sheets hosted by Dr Anthony Delaney and Dr Kate Lister.

Additional July content includes a documentary re-examining Jane Seymour, a French Revolution series on Not Just the Tudors, and a range of history themed documentaries across Little Dot Studios’ YouTube channels.
