Lewis Hamilton’s first Formula One victory for Ferrari has become the focal point of the latest episode of Global’s Up To Speed podcast.
The presenting team say the win could transform the championship battle.
David Coulthard, Will Buxton and Naomi Schiff discuss Hamilton’s breakthrough success and what it means for Ferrari’s chances of challenging for the title this season.
The presenters believe the result has changed the complexion of the championship and brought Hamilton into contention for a record eighth world title.
Will Buxton said: “Lewis and Ferrari are in the fight.”
Naomi Schiff added: “The idea of Lewis potentially being in the fight for an eighth title battle… that’s a great story.”
David Coulthard described the significance of the moment, saying: “Lewis Hamilton coming back from adversity in a Ferrari… people around the world will remember that moment.”
The discussion also focused on how Ferrari’s emergence has widened the championship contest and increased interest in the season.
“This season just got kicked into overdrive because it’s not just about George and Kimi anymore,” said Will.
Coulthard summed up the growing title battle by describing it as “Hollywood delicious”, while Will argued that “Truth is better than fiction”. Naomi agreed, saying: “The reality is better than the script.”
Alongside the championship conversation, the episode examines recent controversy involving Formula One’s governing body following Monaco pit lane speeding penalties and subsequent appeals.
Will was critical of the situation, saying: “The FIA have screwed up again” and describing the outcome as “a pretty disastrous mess.”
Naomi took a more measured view, saying: “It’s great to see that the FIA have held their hands up and said we did mess this up.”
David added simply: “A mistake was made.”
Looking ahead, the presenters believe Ferrari’s challenge could strengthen further if planned developments deliver the expected gains.
Will said: “If they make the steps forward which we think they could… we’ve got a proper fight on.”
Naomi concluded: “Now that’s looking realistic, and how exciting.”
