History Hit celebrates ten years success of bringing the past to life

History Hit reaches its tenth anniversary today, marking a decade since it launched its first podcast to coincide with the bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo.

Founded by Dan Snow in 2015 after he left the BBC, the platform has grown from a single podcast and social media feed to a major multi-platform history network. It now produces eight podcast series, a weekly original documentary, social video, books and a FAST channel.

Snow said: “I remember the first time someone paid me just to talk about history online, it felt like a moment of emancipation. We’re still riding that wave of excitement 10 years later.”

The network now publishes 16 podcast episodes every week and counts nearly 10 million listens a month. Its YouTube channel has more than 1.6 million subscribers and its videos receive over 1 billion views a year.

Among its milestones are the Endurance22 expedition, which documented the discovery of Shackleton’s lost ship, resulting in a film that premiered at the BFI London Film Festival and later streamed globally on Disney+.

History Hit was bought by Little Dot Studios in 2020, boosting its digital growth and partnerships with National Geographic, Channel 5 and Ubisoft. Snow says: “History is booming — and we’re just getting started.”
