There’s speculation that Spotify might be thinking about introducing a podcast only subscription service.
Of course, it already has a very popular music streaming service, so where did the rumours about a podcast subscription come from?
Several publications have picked up on a tweet from Andrew Wallenstein the Chief Media Analyst and President at Variety. He reported on a survey sent out through the Spotify app which asks about the idea of four different podcast subscription options.
What is interesting is that the survey specifically asked about podcast subscriptions not connected to the music streaming plans.
It’s easy to see how the speculation started, but it’s important to point out that the company sends out these types of surveys from time to time in order to gauge interest in future products. In a statement to The Verge, a Spotify spokesperson said: “At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of surveys in an effort to improve our user experience.
“Some of those end up paving the path for our broader user experience and others serve only as important learnings.
“We have no further news to share on future plans at this time.”
Perhaps it’s just an idea at the moment, maybe it’s more than that, but it seems the thought is there, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
