New References podcast reveals what inspires creative leaders

A brand-new podcast has been launched with an aim to help get creative people off their social media feed and to find new artistic and cultural references.

From Amy Winehouse to Island Records, and from Blue Velvet to Baby Reindeer, creative legends including DJ Gilles Peterson, WeTransfer co-founder Damian Bradfield and fashion publicist Mesh Chhibber share the cultural references and lifelong passions that have fuelled them in the new podcast, New References, from creative agency We Are Pi.

In each episode, We Are Pi founder and CEO, Alex Bennett-Grant, will interview a different creative leader who shares their inspirations and cultural references, and reveals what makes them tick and how they stay ahead of the game.

Alex will explore their references more deeply, and they will also offer their advice for anyone stuck in a creative rut.

Episode one features Damian Bradfield, co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of WeTransfer file-sharing company and WePresent editorial website. He shares his passion for supporting the arts, explained how his brand activist journey from Trump to Brexit resulted in winning an Oscar, and what he hates about tech and loves about luxury.

The second episode sees Alex interview Gilles Peterson, the world-renowned DJ, BBC radio host, founder of Brownswood Recordings, Worldwide FM and Worldwide Festival.

Peterson explores his lifelong love of jazz, funk, electronic, and hip-hop music, and reveals some of the icons, places, moments and scenes that have inspired him over the years.

In episode three Mesh Chhibber, the one-time understudy of André Leon Talley who became a high fashion connector and PR for John Galliano, Stella McCartney and Rick Owens, explores with Alex his enthusiasm for supporting young designers, his chance discovery of The Face magazine at an ’80s boarding school, and the highs and lows of working with John Galliano.

“Our creativity is often defined by creative output, our work,” said Alex Bennett-Grant.  “But what about our inputs, our references? The highly personal cultural and artistic points of reference that fuel our individual creativity. The sizzling hot new references that help us get reinspired when we get stuck in a creative block. The real-world experiences, past and present, that give us a unique perspective from everyone else on the feed.

“This podcast is all about giving creative people new references to look up and new inspiration to get out there and create.”

The first episode of New References with guest Damian Bradfield is available now on Apple and Spotify.
