Receipts podcast hosts to step down after decade of presenting

The creators of The Receipts Podcast will step back from hosting, with plans to bring in new voices while they move into production roles.

The BBC has reported that Audrey Indome and Tolani Shoneye will leave the microphone after nearly ten years of episodes and discussions.

Speaking to the BBC, Tolani said the decision had been difficult, describing it as “the most difficult decision ever”, while Audrey said stepping away would allow them to continue evolving creatively rather than remaining in a familiar format.

Launched in 2016, the podcast created a space for black women to discuss relationships, careers and culture, growing into a long-running series with close to 300 episodes.

The pair later expanded the brand with a BBC spin-off, which they said became the first podcast hosted by black and brown women to reach number one on the Apple Podcasts chart.

They also signed an exclusive deal with Spotify in 2019, marking a period of commercial growth for the show.

Despite this, both hosts told the BBC that the timing felt right to step back from presenting duties, while continuing to shape the programme behind the scenes. The podcast will continue with new hosts, as Indome and Shoneye take on executive producer roles.

According to the BBC report, the pair plan to launch a search for new presenters through an open process featuring applications, workshops and training, with a focus on discovering fresh perspectives rather than direct replacements.

Tolani told the BBC they are looking for “new voices, new perspectives and new ideas”, while also creating opportunities for those who may not traditionally see themselves as podcast hosts.

The move follows a decade that included both growth and challenges, including the departure of former co-host Milena Sanchez in 2023. Both presenters said the experience informed how they will support future hosts working on the show.

They told the BBC that collaboration behind the scenes will be as important as on-air performance for the next phase of the podcast.
