Naomi Schiff, Will Buxton and Jolie Sharpe analyse the dramatic start to the 2026 F1 season in Australia.
Mercedes claimed a commanding victory, with George Russell leading the charge, prompting discussion over whether the team has already mastered the new regulations.
Schiff said: “Often when we have these new eras, the first winner is the one who truly understood the regulations – and this looks like no exception.”
Buxton added: “George Russell and Mercedes have come out on top in the new F1 era, winning the first race of the season in Australia.”
Ferrari faced criticism after strategy calls failed to capitalise on pit windows. Sharpe remarked: “Did Ferrari mess up their strategy? The short answer is yes.” Buxton suggested a split strategy might have given them a fighting chance.
The new power units triggered debate over overtaking and racing authenticity. Buxton questioned: “A lot of the passes are happening because of who’s harvesting, who’s lifting and coasting – is that racing?”
Schiff countered: “You can say what you want, but it definitely made for more interesting racing for spectators.”
Home disappointment hit Oscar Piastri hard, with a crash enroute to the grid ending his race before it began. Schiff noted: “Honestly, it couldn’t have gone worse. His whole grandstand was there waiting to cheer him on.”
Emerging talent also shone. Schiff highlighted Kimi Antonelli, while Sharpe praised another driver finishing in the points on their F1 debut.
Audi made a strong impression in their first outing as a works team, whereas Aston Martin struggled with reliability, overshadowing their opening weekend.
The hosts wrapped up by offering verdicts on strategy, driver performances, and the potential shape of the championship in the early stages of the 2026 season.
