Northern News podcast returns for sixth series with new guests

Amy Gledhill and Ian Smith are bringing their comedy podcast Northern News back for a sixth series.

The new run launches on 2 April, with comedian Stevie Martin joining as the first guest, as the show continues to highlight unusual and overlooked stories from local newspapers across the North of England.

Hosted by the two comedians, now based in London, the podcast focuses on stories that rarely reach national headlines but offer a distinct perspective on regional life, often through humour and unexpected detail.

Since its launch in 2023, Northern News has built a strong following, reaching more than 1.45 million downloads. Its format centres on discussing real news stories, ranging from minor local incidents to more unusual events, all drawn from regional reporting.

The sixth series will also see the return of several guest contributors, including Andy Zaltzman, Alison Spittle, Stuart Laws, Pierre Novellie, Catherine Bohart and Phil Wang, who will join Amy and Ian in studio discussions.

Previous guests have included a wide range of UK comedians such as Ross Noble, Maisie Adam, Nish Kumar, Lucy Beaumont, Jessica Knappett, Sam Campbell, David O’Doherty, Rosie Jones and Nick Mohammed.

Amy Gledhill continues to balance her podcast work with television appearances, including Last One Laughing and an upcoming series of Taskmaster this year, while Ian Smith remains active across TV and radio comedy, including appearances on Live at the Apollo and BBC Radio 4.

Northern News is hosted by Acast and will be available on major platforms including Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
