A new podcast series is using personal stories to explore LGBT+ identity, history and culture through conversations with people from different generations and creative backgrounds.
Singer-songwriter and producer Kris Zar has launched Kaleidoscope of Gaze during Pride Month, bringing together writers, artists, performers and community voices to discuss their experiences of life as LGBT+ people.
The series combines conversations about coming out, creativity, relationships and resilience with reflections on how LGBT+ life has changed over time.
The first episode features Paul Burston, who discusses growing up gay in Wales and the challenges he faced as a teenager.
Paul also reflects on the influence of David Bowie on his sense of identity and wellbeing, his friendship with Derek Jarman, and his views on loneliness, dating apps, activism and the AIDS pandemic.
Other episodes feature a range of guests from across the creative industries. Playwright Shelley Silas discusses antisemitism, relationships, acceptance and women’s rights, including the rights of transgender women.
Painter Gavin Dobson reflects on growing up in North East England, considers the idea of queer art and talks about living with aphantasia.
The series also includes a conversation with West End performer and vocal coach Daniel Koek, who discusses career challenges for gay performers and the impact of ageism within the entertainment industry.
Another episode features Ralph and Pete, two Londoners in their seventies, reflecting on decades of gay life in the capital and the social changes they have witnessed, from a time when homosexuality was illegal through to the introduction of equal marriage.
Speaking about the project, Kris said: “Everything can feel like a show on social media nowadays, and sometimes incredibly talented and creative people don’t get the attention they deserve.
“I wanted to create something that highlights just how much talent, creativity, and insight the LGBT+ community brings to the wider world.”
Kaleidoscope of Gaze is available on major podcast platforms.
A special accompanying song, also titled Kaleidoscope of Gaze, is due for release alongside the podcast.
