Beverley Knight has described severe menopause symptoms that disrupted her stage performances during a recent podcast interview.
The singer and West End performer spoke on Midlife, Messy and Marvellous, hosted by journalist and presenter Marverine Cole, outlining the impact of perimenopause on her daily life and work.
Currently appearing in Marie and Rosetta in London, Beverley explained how symptoms including brain fog, forgetfulness and hot flushes have affected her, alongside anxiety she had not previously experienced.
She recalled a distressing moment during a performance of The Drifters Girl when heart palpitations forced her to stop mid-song, saying, “I can’t breathe.” She was taken to hospital, where tests later confirmed the episode was linked to menopause.
Beverley told Marverine she now manages her health through strict routines, including diet, sleep and hydration, and maintaining control over stress.
She also shared advice for others experiencing similar symptoms, encouraging them to seek professional support and focus on sustainable lifestyle changes.
“Find foods you really enjoy and load up on them. Enjoy yourself, don’t beat yourself for having the odd treat, but be mindful,” she said.
The podcast was created by Marverine Cole as a six-part series aimed at women navigating midlife and menopause, with a focus on open and practical conversations.
The first episode featured Brenda Edwards, who discussed early menopause following a stage three breast cancer diagnosis and coping with personal loss.
Other guests in the series include broadcaster Gillian Joseph, GP and author Dr Ellie Cannon, businesswoman Saira Khan and actress Chizzy Akudolu, each sharing their own experiences of midlife.
Midlife, Messy and Marvellous is available on YouTube and major podcast platforms.
