August brings a diverse line-up of new podcasts, documentaries, and YouTube releases across the History Hit and Little Dot Studios networks.
Podcast listeners and streaming audiences can expect a strong focus on historical storytelling, with several new series and episodes exploring ancient civilisations, pivotal moments in world history, and personal stories from the past.
On the History Hit streaming service, ‘Medieval Summer’ debuts on 21 August, featuring Matt Lewis and Eleanor Janega as they return to Cosmeston Medieval village.
They investigate daily life in the 14th century, working with experimental archaeologists to explore how people dressed, worked, played, and ate during the long summer months.
Earlier in the month, ‘Revolutionary Russia’ launches on 6 August, offering a four-part series with experts including Helen Rappaport and Victor Sebeysten.
The series examines the personalities and events that led to the fall of the Romanovs and the rise of the communists.
Other streaming highlights include ‘Going Medieval’, presented by Dr Eleanor Janega, which looks at the varied experiences of life in medieval England, and ‘Greatest Discoveries: Pompeii’, where Tristan Hughes explores the archaeology and final days of the Roman town destroyed by Mount Vesuvius.
On the History Hit YouTube channel, archaeologist Giselle Kiraly is featured in ‘Unlocking the Secrets of Ancient Egyptian Coffins’, airing 20 August.
The programme provides behind-the-scenes access to the Petrie Museum, where new research is uncovering secrets from ancient Egypt.
Later in the month, ‘The Sniper Rifle’ sees Luke Tomes and Jonathan Ferguson examine the evolution of this iconic weapon at the Leeds Armouries.
Podcast releases this month include Dan Snow’s journeys to Belize for ‘The Rise and Fall of the Maya’, and to China for an episode on the Great Wall.
‘The Ancients’ explores the legend of Romulus and Remus, while ‘Not Just the Tudors’ investigates the French Revolution through the eyes of those who lived it.
Little Dot Studios’ Real Stories and Timeline channels also offer new documentaries, such as ‘Town of Glory’, ‘Nuked. Fallout on the Forgotten Shore’, and ‘Reckonings’, each providing unique perspectives on recent and distant history.
